The Loyal Traitor illustrations were Derek Collard's first published work. In collaboration with author Sylvia Haymon this illustrated fiction set amidst the historic event of Robert Kett's execution was first published by Chatto & Windus London in 1965

The Story

The Loyal Traitor is set in December 1549 and follows adventures of Tom Redman a poor country boy from Wymondham who's father has been killed in the battle of Dussindale. Tom journeys to Norwich to witness the public execution of the rebel leader Robert Kett.  Caught up in a plot to avenge both the death of his father and demise of the rebel army. Tom finds himself in  circumstances that forge an unlikely friendship between John Dudley (1st Earl of Warwick) the man chiefly responsible for the Robert Ket's downfall and subsequent execution.
